I was on the train when it happened. Luckily we were stopped at a signal. At first when I felt the train bouncing around I thought it was just starting up and we had a really bad driver, but then I saw some parked locos outside (we were next to the rail yard where they park the unused locos) hopping around to the same beat. They never looked in any danger of coming off the tracks, but they had really bouncy suspension and they were swaying around the place like nobody's business. It was actually quite fun watching them hop from side to side in perfect unison -- doing the locomotion, so to speak. What wasn't so fun was watching the overhead wires swaying violently in time (they stayed intact, fortunately). It also wasn't very fun sitting on the stationary train for an hour and a half after the quake while they did all the inspections and paperwork and stuff before they could take us back to the station.

But I'm fine, and everyone else I know is fine. Nothing in my place seemed to move -- not even the cup that was positioned precariously on the edge of the table. My cat seems completely unfazed. And as a bonus, I got half a day off work today while they inspected the building!

I guess this means the island won't be sinking into the ocean, as predicted by National Enquirer's house psychics.

I don't know why I keep reading that paper, they're never right.

That's nice'n'all, Mbossa, but the OP clearly wanted to know if everyone in NZ is OK!

I was upstairs at work yesterday & felt some mild shaking.

Mild was more than enough for me thanks.

I'm on the Coromandel Peninsula - long way from the quake epicentre.
