(The above post was aimed at coolbryne. At the silly sock thing, the last time I spent a majority of a year with my parents I was eight, I was fully independent to go missing for a few days by the age of fifteen, had my own place at sixteen and was fully at university at seventeen. Ironically since earlier this year it is about the most accurate to say I am with my parents but it is a temporary thing [caused by my consultancy crashing and burning] and by the way while I am technically mooching off them I lent them far more money when I had a job which ain't paid back yet... So by all means say I've misunderstood some real life thing which is quite commonplace for me [because of this unusual bringing up] but I ain't some overgrown baby)

Also, what is the $$$ supposed to be for, exactly? IME, people give money at funerals to help defray the funeral costs. But Dominic's not paying for it, so what gives? |

With the Internet, it's not really hard to track down phone numbers. I was just checking something out and found a phone number for somebody related tangentially to the Opal story. I wasn't even tempted to call to verify anything even though this person could answer all the questions easily.
Maybe I'm more normal than I thought. |

Hell if I know. I didn't see anyone in any of the Opal threads ask Opal's mom where they could send money. Maybe it was in a PM, or maybe Opal's mom just assumed that Opal's fans would want to contribute something, for Dominic or for the funeral.

Brian, people often want to raise a little scratch for a kid when he or she loses a parent, hoping to help out with college or whatever the kid might need. Mostly it's wanting to do SOMETHING for the kid because Lord knows they need it.

A Scholarship fund would be one thing, but a general fundraiser, on the internet no less, for what? My mom died, so I got a new cellphone/laptop/car? Huh? That's completely out of any experience I've ever had. YMMV.

You don't have to give anything. What do you care if other people do?

I don't, just saying that I've never heard of such a thing.

Yep. It's not like he's being rewarded for his mom dying or reimbursed for anything. It's going in a trust to be there should he need it.

It's pretty common for people to take up a collection, especially in the case of an underage kid. If the internet allows for more people to give who want to give, that's their business and I can't fault someone for trying.
I'd wait for Dan to say something on Fathom, since I'm naturally inclined to be wary first, but if he says it's legit, let the people give if they want to give. It may not be traditional, but the internet blazes new traditions every day. Like my mother says about everything modern: "if we'd had it in my day, of course we would have used it." |

The few remaining Fathomites are copying and pasting memorable threads to their "fallout shelter" site. They have no access to the Fathom database.
http://fff.fathom.org/forums/showthr...459#post592459 Fathom is likely to close. http://fff.fathom.org/forums/showthr...325#post592325 Kind of sad. It's like watching the last holdouts on a sinking island, facing the inevitable, packing up their belongings, and knowing they can only take a few things with them when they leave. |

I can see people giving money to offset funeral costs, to create a scholarship for a child, or to help with household expenses for say a widow(er) who lost half of the family income.
But giving money to a soon to be 18 year old, for no apparent reason? Not buying it. You guys go ahead, though. |

Sadly I'm with Brian on this one. Maybe it is just my little backwater burg, but I've never seen the plate passed around for one particular survivor. I've witnessed a lot of requests for donations to the deceased or families charity of choice. I even encountered one request for donations to little Timmy's college trust. Usually there is some explanation. A reason given. Shit, if he just needs scratch for some iPad apps, lawyer Grammy should be capable.
Of course my recall may be imperfect, or my little corner of the country just odd. Whichever, do as you each individually wish. |

I've known it to happen, though it was more elaborately planned, an official "foundation" or "memorial fund" set up, etc.

I've seen it done as just straight donations, albeit mostly when the surviving spouse was already in financial straits.

I thought about whether it would be right to offer advice on saving Fathom and its content. I hate the possibility of seeing years of posts disappear into the ether. However, I decided against it; there's probably so much TMI in there about Katherine's son, and it would be better for the sake of his future privacy to see all of that go away. There's still quite a bit on the SDMB, but the less that's out there, the better.

Simple, if you wish to make a significant donation, then call to ensure that it is not a scam. If you have reason to believe it is a scam, call the authorities. If you wish to gawk, do not call, for that is too intrusive, particularly when the family is suffering from grief.

I don't understand setting up a fund "just because". Several Dopers with children have died, and at least one (Norinew) had kids who were Dopers. I'm not remembering anyone setting up a donation account for them. |

In Opal's case, many people asked if they could give funds to Dom and so the family set up a way for them to do so. It might have been more classy to have them donate to a mental health charity or something but I don't see any begging for funds.
