I read the comments and sounds like there is a law (?) against washing your car on Sunday or cutting your lawn on Sunday.

so, no using water or power?

No working on Sundays. Unless you are a farmer, in healthcare or tourist/hospitality industry. Or have official permission.

It's permitted to do some hobby work in the garden, so light weeding or pruning is permitted, as this is considered fun, not work.

Mowing the lawn, even with a reel mower, is not permitted on Sundays. There were some kids who wanted to play football (soccer) on a Sunday, which is permitted. They decided to get out the powered mower to mow the field on a Sunday. I think they got shut down in under 5 minutes.

Most Swiss live in multi-family housing, so activities that would disturb your neighbors' rest is forbidden on Sundays. No vacuuming. No laundry, either washing or drying, even if you have your own machines.

Hanging out one's laundry on a Sunday would disturb the neighbors as you're reminding them of work (or something like that).

There are places you can wash your car 363/365 days a year. Not on Christmas or Easter. These places are located in industry areas, so no one is disturbed.

Switerland is still mostly set up for families where the mother stays at home. Until 2020, shops closed on M-F at 6:30, and on Saturday at 4pm. They were only allowed to be open on four Sundays in a year. At least for Kanton Luzern.

In May 2020, shop hours were extended to 7:00pm M-F, and 5pm on Saturday. This was planned before COVID. They are still discussing the four Sundays in a year.

There are some special rules, so it means there are shops in many train stations. When someone comes to Swizerland and needs to buy something on a Sunday, they are told to go to a major train station (Luzern or Zurich) or even the airport (Zurich, Basel or Geneva).

In my town, as today is a Sunday, I have a choice of 3 restaurants, one of which is at the rest stop on the autobahn. There are 2 take-away shops and there are 2-3 bakeries, but I think they close at 2pm. The good bakery doesn't open on Sundays. There is a self-serve farmer shop which is open until 7pm, and I can buy milk and yogurt at the bakery. Otherwise I need to go to Luzern if I need baking powder, sugar, or something similar.

At my employer, when there is a need to do a software deployement, like many companies, this is done on the weekend. If it needs to be done on Sunday, my employer has to get permission from the government, which will include who exactly is doing the work, when they will be working, etc. The telephone company would have to do the same.

Last weekend the national train company replaced a bridge in Luzern. Of course they got permission to work the necessary hours, which was from just after midnight, Friday night, until Monday morning at 5 am.

Found this while looking for McDonald's fried apple pie photos:
Where Can You Find McDonald's Fried Apple Pies and Are They Worth It?

It's from August 2024, so it might have changed.

There's one more batch to Round 1 to go. I am going to be out of town Friday morning through Sunday evening, so I will post them tomorrow instead of Thursday, just so I am here for a while after they go up. In case they explode or something.

Now I know what I'm doing the next time I'm in Ohio. French toast sandwich at White Castle looks good.

(It is 4:20 am and I have been awake for the last 2 hours for whatever reasons. Just 1.5 hours before the alarm goes off.)

Capricious Dictatorial Fiat is one of the options under consideration, but I might save that for later rounds and do something else for Round 1, depending on how many ties we end up with.

I will add my thanks for the megapoll.

Now I just need to figure out when I can get to a McDs that has all-day breakfast - the one I go to for lunch (I got a Grimace Minecraft toy yesterday, just because) doesn't serve breakfast stuff, except coffee and donuts.

FYI there's a location north of Basel, in France, that offers breakfast items. Well, the Bacon Egg McMuffin at least. I'm not sure I'd want to drive more than 40 miles but there it is.

There are breakfast items (both Edd & Cheese McMuffin and Bacon & Egg McMuffin) on the Swiss McDonalds site, so they do offer them. Might have to go to the one in Zurich train station to find it.

First batch of polls for Round 2 is up.

There are some matches in Round 2 that amused me when I saw how they matched up, but NO SHENANIGANS WERE EMPLOYED to match anything with anything else.

Also, we will have our first restaurant going up against itself in this round.

Hey, I didn't say no shenanigans in general. Just not in creating the matches that are...shall we say...perfectly appropriate for each other.

Tonight's round is going to drop a couple hours late because I have to run out after work and pick up my RX.

Maybe I'll stop for some fast food while I'm out. The stuff I have thawing in the fridge can wait a day, I am sure.

Went to Wendy's for breakfast. Ordered a sausage breakfast burrito. They gave me two sausage biscuits instead. I didn't check the bag until I was home. So... they screwed up my order, but is it a win?

For the sake of science and sloth I did a Dave's Double & fries for dinner last night. Its a solid offering; good beef, slice o' cheese, decent sauce, maybe coulda used another slice of tomato. Shoestring fries piping hot with a good jolt of salt. For twelve bucks that passes for a good value these days crazy kids mumble grumble...

I'm emailing them to bring back #18, the chicken parm.
Being replaced by the ex-CEO of Wingstop is bad news I think. Wingstop is just a gimmick, all about the sauces/coatings and mediocre chicken. He might grow the company, but probably at the expense of quality.

I guess this barely affects me as I only get subs from chains when I'm traveling, but it will be sad to see Jersey Mike's slide down to the level of a Subway or Quiznos. I've lived most of my life next to the county where they started.

Let us both pray that doesn't happen, although I will dispute placing Quiznos as being poor quality. They screwed up their business model, yes, but the product is still as good as it has been, IMO.

@Die Capacitrix

The more I find out about Switzerland the more I worry that you are being held hostage rather than living there voluntarily. Blink twice if we need to send help!

Until about a year ago, I had always had the idea that we would probably move back to the U.S. after retiring. Hubby has stated he'd much rather stay here, and I'm not sure where in the U.S. we'd go.

After recent events, here is looking better and better.
