when I opened facebook today it was on a notification saying they "removed my content" and how I could argue about it....but what content are they even talking about?? I couldn't figure out a way to tell! I still can't.

in fact, I think the last thing I did was remove my comment in a YEARS ago thread about Red Green because twice in the last week I got spam addressed to me because of that post...so WTH. I'm pretty sure that has to be it - I deleted my comment after reporting the spam. I hate facebook but not enough to go pit them. (maybe I already did and have forgotten?)

and in other news the arthritis in my knees has really been giving me increased pain and stiffness lately.

pain! you take for granted not having any until it shows up (or returns).

I'm sorry the sciatica hasn't eased up, Smartie, and hope the doc has some solution for you.

Mine did go away eventually, but it took awhile. Not a long while, but a couple of weeks or so if I remember right.

Mine took a series of 3 injections of steroids and anesthetic. But it never came back, and I had been laid up for over 4 months!

Thats why I always try to land on my head so there's no major damage.

A nice dry winter day today. The sun tried to peek through but lost the battle. I had great plans to accomplish useful things, but flooped around the shack and doodled on fluid dynamics of compound turbochargers instead. Interesting stuff going on in there. I did get in a nice after dinner stroll though, which clears my conscience to pig out with the Ben & Jerry's. I was going to do that anyway of course, since my conscience is still in new unused condition in the original packaging. Project for the evening is setting up a new Linux box. Its a teeny little fan-free mini-ITX unit about the size of a paperback. Totally silent and pulls ten watts, we'll see if it can keep up.

For this being a day off, I feel even more tired than if I'd worked all day! First off, I made an appointment for what I thought was intended to do something about the sciatica AND my crappy knee but yesterday I got a call telling me that the doc I was scheduled with was only able to treat the knee--so the problem that's long term and non-emergent, the problem that does NOT require me to take NSAIDs twice a day for the past two weeks doesn't get any attention for another ten days. Great. I don't quite understand how nobody in my healthcare "team" seems to be concerned that in order to function at all I have to take a lot of meds that directly fight with my major daily med--and that fight means making me so unable to clot that a minor car accident (and gosh, no risk of THAT for a delivery driver, right?) could cause internal cranial bleeding that could kill me in hours. And it's not just a little bit of NSAIDs, I've literally taken more of the stuff in the past two weeks than I've taken in the past two YEARS. Yeesh.

So I'm trying not to think about that and went ahead with the knee appointment and got a big old shot of steroids in the knee and a brace to wear when I'm working. Caused the knee to swell up quite a bit but that seems to have gone down mostly and yeah, I did manage to walk a fair amount without pain so that's good.

BTW, the specialist I'll be seeing for the sciatica is called a "physiatrist" which was a very new one for me. The doc I had the phone consult with said that's what he was recommending and at first I thought he said "psychiatrist" and nearly went through the phone thinking he was saying my pain was all in my head but I had him spell it and sure enough, it's a real specialty that works with pain management so might actually be useful. Won't be seeing that one for another week so here's hoping I don't drop dead before that.

I had to leave immediately after the knee appointment to take Shoga down to Corvallis for a followup on the dilated cardiomyopathy study she participated in a few years back. I brought them to Kaiser with me so I could jump right on the freeway and made it to OSU a few minutes early. While Shoga was in getting measured and scoped and whatnot Kosh and I wandered around--there's a field by the building with a couple cows and a horse in it so Kosh had his very first meeting with actual cattle in his five years of being a cattle dog lol. He learned he should not bark shrilly at the cows and also learned quite a lot about electric fences, like not to shove his big jughead through the fence rails.

After Shoga was all done we headed home via 99W so we could stop along the Willamette Greenway for me to pee and them to run around like crazydogs. Weather was perfect today, sunny and warm and we all enjoyed the walk. I can only walk for short periods of time before the sciatica starts doing unpleasant things to my nethers but hey, on the plus side the knee was pretty tight.

I'm quite happy to be home, fed and now all I have to do is change the sheets on the bed. Tomorrow is laundry. Yay.

It's sad that taters hasn't posted here for awhile, but I'm glad to report that she posted on Facebook just a few days ago.

Speaking of beloved posters, here's a shout out to thylacine. Just because.

And you guys! Do you remember Euryphasia (sp?)? I'll be in her hometown of Mirimachi New Brunswick next month to watch the eclipse. As far as I know, she's not on Facebook anymore, or I might have screwed up the courage to suggest we meet. I have a hunch that she and my daughter would get along like...well, like two similarly aged people with a lot in common (last I knew of Eury).

Sigh. About two years ago I wrote about the drama surrounding Mr. Duck's recently-deceased mother and her will. Long story short, the Duck brothers have been estranged from their sister ever since. This morning, Mr. Duck got a message from his brother-in-law saying that Sister Duck has had a massive heart attack and that she has been given a 50/50 chance of surviving the next 48 hours. Urgh. Mr. Duck did not seem to react much to the news, and, in fact, just five minutes later he was absolutely gleeful about finding an appealing-looking used car on Facebook. Eh, Sister Duck is in Arizona, so it's not like we can easily rush off to see her. So, a road trip to look at a car (also in New Brunswick!) will be in order tomorrow instead.

Life, eh?

Thanks, Peeky, I'm just trying to keep my head up and keep on keepin' on. I will NOT be doing laundry today, however, because yesterday I was stoopid and didn't hydrate well plus the amount of walking I did was outside my normal parameters so I handed myself a night of intense leg cramps. Great. I'm tired and headachey and nothing in my body feels up to schlepping laundry baskets and fighting with the laundromat denizens on a Friday so I'll just dig deep in the closet for something to wear to work for a few days and we'll try this again next Thursday. I do have to go to Costco though, the dogs are near 'bout out of food so that's a mandate. Cover me, boys, I'm goin' in!

It's a cold and dreary day, so I put out more hay for the bunnies. I picked a different spot, so more of the grass gets fertilized.

Well, hello there.

I'm sorry I haven't checked in for a bit.

I've just been super busy with life. A large project at work is taking up a lot of my time, and I've been putting in a lot of extra work hours.

Additionally, those pups are growing like weeds and are very time-intensive. I don't get much "me" time to sit at my computer.

smartie, I'm sorry you've been in so much pain. I hope you get some help to get that under control.

My daughter and son-in-law are coming from Missouri next week, and I'm excited to see them. My son-in-law has received a very large promotion and has to come to the Seattle offices. My daughter has also received a promotion in the last few months and will check out her Seattle location since K is coming. The grandkids will be staying in Missouri, so I won't be able to see them.

I hoped the promotion would mean moving back here, but they get to stay in MO. They start building their new house in May.

Yesterday was beautiful, but I spent it running errands and taking care of some indoor chores.

The rain is supposed to move back in today, which sucks because we have plans to load the pups up and take them with us to visit my son. Our plans called for a hike down to the beach. I'm not sure we'll do the hike, but we'll see what the weather does for real. It's the PNW, where if you give it a minute, the weather will change.

The pups destroyed my backyard and all my plants. I haven't decided whether to attempt to repair it this year or just let it go and start from scratch next year. If I try to repair it, it means fencing off part of the yard so the pups can't get to that area. That's more money, and I have other projects that need to be done this year, too.

I spent several years bringing my backyard back to a spot of beauty, so it's a little frustrating, but they're puppies, and I knew going in the pups would be rough on the yard. I don't think I thought about exactly how hard they'd be, though. Polar and Brandi didn't cause this much damage, but to be fair, they were a little older when we got them.

In my bird-feeding area, a hawk has been very active around my yard. Since all the cover is gone, it's easy for the hawk to see the birds at the feeder. I was thinking about taking the feeder down, but stuff is beginning to leaf out, and I'll keep an eye on things. It's been shocking to see it sitting on the fence or on top of the feeding station several times. Fortunately, I have not seen it with prey in its beak or talons.

So, as you can see, life has been rather mundane for me. I just keep on keepin' on.

I set my clocks forwards but the damn (new) range took forever. I felt like a luddite.
The little clock button has (3 secs) next to it so I thought I needed to do that, but that was to enter the settings menu.
Model number is really hiding on the stove and the setup manual doesn't include a model number or how to set the clock.

I finally realized there is a barcode on the door that should lead to the Samsung site and it thankfully did.

I got the full manual downloaded and went to setting the clock and it still wouldn't work. But I accidently got it to clock set mode and entered the time.

OK, but now I have to know how to do it for the future and to write it up. I found a video on it and instead of holding the clock button for 3 seconds, I was just suppose to tap it and goes into clock setting mode. Jebus Kristopher I feel like a dope.

With a door to heaven secured by an unbreakable lock controlled by an unlabeled keypad backed up by a cryptic menu tree 1000 layers deep in 2 point font. And just when they get a good start on memorizing all the wrong pathways, an automatic system update comes along and scrambles them all up again.

Well, the bunnies loved the alfalfa hay. But that isn't all that good for them, so when it ran out we bought a bale of timothy hay which is supposed to be better for them. So last time it snowed I put out a chuck of the timothy.

They resolutely haven't touched it. They will be near it, nibbling on the grass, but will not eat it. I guess the alfalfa is like ice cream and this stuff is like steamed squash.

Weekend Update:
Saturday: Chores and taxes, then had a date night with Husband - for Christmas he got me tickets to the symphony, where they showed "The Princess Bride" while performing the score. It was fun! We grabbed dinner in town before hand at an Argentinian place near the hall, which was handy because it was spitting rain all day.

On Sunday I played both masses, ran for groceries, and had a very kitcheny afternoon. Decided I wanted manicotti and focaccia, so spent lots of time playing with food while snow squalls raged outside. Ordered a dress and shoes for Swimmy for Easter. Almost stepped on a ground hog coming into the house after church; he was at the bottom of the steps outside the kitchen door. If he hadn't run as I turned the corner I would have stumbled on him. I assume he was mopping up leavings from the bird feeders, which have been busy. The starlings dominate about half the time, with woodpeckers, mourning doves, juncos, sparrows, titmice, chickadees, and cardinals squeezing in when the stupid starlings aren't around. Didn't realize the Oscars were on last night, so Swimmy and I watched "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" since she's a big Johnny Depp fan and we hadn't seen it for a while. Nearly finished knitting a hat for coworkers impending baby.

Also finished the audiobook of "Pachinko" by Min Jin Lee. It was a good read, I'd give it 3.5 stars. I had zero knowledge/background on the Korean diaspora in Japan in the 20th century, which was the focus. My primary complaint is that the last third of the book was less a story involving the main characters and more of a series of vignettes of side characters that served to highlight various topics (racism, sexual agency, addiction, etc.). In a perfect world I would have suggested the book end after part two and the author use the characters/ideas in the latter third of the book for new books that are more fleshed out.

In classic March fashion, it was 28°F this morning and yesterday's snow was still on the ground, but the high for today is 50° and it's supposed to be 65° tomorrow. March is the silliest month, but I kind of like it.

The Ides Of March

Three old buddies go backpacking on the beach. Just a pleasant little season opener at the coast. What could go wrong? A tale of grit, skill, and the indominable will to survive. Coming soon on Netflix.

We meet up at oh-noon-thirty tomorrow. Lots to do today. Its been awhile since my last expedition and stuff has drifted. Also a few chores to take care of. I'm going to see about knocking together a travois type thing using the axle & wheels off an old baby carriage. Then I can bring beer and more grub and water.

Somebody must have made a dandy sacrifice to the weather gods because we're looking at a week of warm sunny days starting tomorrow. This area has deadly rip tides though so there's no chance anybody's going swimming. No moon til just before dawn so the stargazing should be excellent.

Got the cart built. A piece of scrap plywood and some deck screws. As I was drlling, I realized that the screws were from stakesides I built on the trailer I used to haul my stuff up to the city after I graduated. Then again when I hauled my dad's stuff after he retired. And now they are going to help me party on the beach. Funny how little things like that hang around. Well, see you in a couple days.

They named our new boss. She's nice, but also a little psychotically intense. On the one hand that will be an improvement over the last guy, who could best be described as lackadaisical most of the time. OTOH I'm not convinced this new one will listen to anyone but her own nonstop internal monologue. My goal is to get away ASAP. This was compounded by the fact that the marketing person I like best and have worked with the most is going back to sales. I took a day off yesterday for my mental health, including sending out three more resumes. Time to step up the job hunt. I'm rapidly going from, "It isn't so bad here, I can take my time selecting my next move," to "NOW. Need to move NOW."

I hope you find a great new position ASAP, Solfy. I know that Need To Move NOW feeling.

It's time to get real about moving to a new home. We have realtors coming by in a couple of hours to size up our house and get the ball rolling. The house is clean and uncluttered, our pricey sewer lateral replacement (required by our damn city before a house can be sold) is done and paid for, and nothing major needs repair or repainting. I hope our prospective buyers to come don't notice our crappy neighbors, which are the only drawbacks of this house, in my opinion. Oh yeah, and the master bathroom has only one sink on a tiny vanity. That's the other drawback.

But my stomach is churning. It has been 25 years since we last moved and I'm not looking forward to the chaos and upheaval and confusing paperwork. At least a bank will be only minimally involved, since this house is paid off. No loan crap to deal with! So 55+ community in the country, here we come, hopefully.

At least we won't be dealing with that, pretty much. We did originally want to move last year, right after retiring. But dealing with Medicare, 401(k)s, getting our income stream set up through Schwab, etc., took all our mental energy. And we wanted a few months to just enjoy retirement and have fun. Now we have to knuckle down and work on moving.

The realtors have come and gone. They say our property should sell quickly, and calmed our fears about being "homeless" between the sale of this house and the purchase of our next one. I confess I didn't grasp a lot of how he described it would shake out, but the main guy was our realtor 25 years ago and went above and beyond back then. We trust him.

And just 15 minutes before they showed up, a story popped up in our news feeds that the 6% commission "rule" is gone, and that buying and selling homes should cost a lot less now. I'm still reading and trying to grasp how it'll all shake out, but here's a link to CNN's article on it.

How much snow did we get? Trash day was supposed to be Thursday, but the trash company said it would be Friday. But today they said that trucks were getting stuck, so it will be Saturday or so. I did the sidewalk of the lady next door. Didn't clear a pathway to her door, but I'll do that during the next stint of shoveling.

You're a good neighbor, Wolfie!

Well, went to see the physiatrist and learned that what I've been going through isn't, strictly speaking, sciatic pain as there's no nerve involvement or damage so that's good. Doc says is likely one or more of the weird little baskety muscles that attach to the pelvis and hold everything together, probably one that attaches to my left seat bone. She wrote me orders for a pelvic MRI and for pelvic physical therapy and gave me impressive side eye when I told her just how MUCH I've been relying on NSAIDs to function. I stopped taking them on Wednesday morning because apparently things that can go OUT while you're sleeping with no warning whatsoever can sometimes go back IN again and my pain levels are down to very manageable levels. I assured her that I'm completely aware of just how risky the strategy has been but pointed out that nobody's leaping out of the tall weeds to offer a better alternative and, well, girl's gotta earn a living.

After that I went and FINALLY caught up on a rather impressive amount of laundry but it's all done now and although I'm tired AF I feel like I've accomplished a lot. Now I'm gonna eat something and fall over for a bit, I'm a bit tired/sore but not actually damaged or screaming so I'm counting this as a win.

Mornin' all.

It's been a hell of a week, and I'll probably rack up more work hours today.

Solfy, I know and understand the "move NOW" feeling. I hope you can leave there quickly and find a job worth the move.

Smartie, I'm glad you saw a medical professional, and I hope you're on the way to always feeling good.

Wolfie, you're a good neighbor!

Teela, good luck with selling and moving!

The pups are growing like weeds, especially Buster. Maisie was catching up to Buster there for a bit, but Buster had a really large spurt so that you can see the difference between them again.

Although housetrained, they are still into everything, and I mean everything. I can't let them run freely through the house. They still have a pen in the kitchen, plus the hallway to the rest of the house is gated. I let them come upstairs to "work" with me, but that's only been in the last month or two.

I don't trust them not to chew wires, much less shoes and other goods. I try to keep everything out of reach, but it's getting to the point where Buster and Maisie can reach things on high surfaces, so counters must be clear at all times. Buster's reach is impressive for a six-month-old pup.

At any rate, they keep us busy. My beautiful backyard is destroyed, and I'm still mulling fencing off a portion of it. One, I don't want the extra expense, and two, the yard is small anyway, and I just feel like having it fenced off even more would make it feel smaller. It's a conundrum.

I know I need to make a decision soon because, despite the pups' best efforts, some of my perennials are starting to pop up, and I'm also feeling the urge to get out there and play in the dirt.

Alrighty, I need to head out to the store to get some more chow for the pups. They have enough for lunch, but after that it's gone.

Take care.

'Scuse, taters, but I must insist you pay the Puppy Tax here--you can't go on about how much they're growing and changing without furnishing proof, y'know?

Your fate was sealed when you opted for labradors, they're always following their noses and anything they sniff they must also taste. If you haven't laid in a goodly stock of bitter apple spray might want to get on that and coat all wires liberally since those are danger for idiot derpuppies. Also tons and tons of chewable toys since they're likely teething briskly and will need to chomp All The Things for the forseeable future.

Don't worry too much about the yard, it's gonna suck for a year or three until the doggos get their Shipment of Brains and stop being mindless velociraptors. Then you'll have a good decade or so in which to grub in the dirt to your heart's content.

Well, I moved a metric buttload of snow. I shoveled the lady next door's path to her front door and cleaned off the steps. (She's really frail.) Then I went over to the new place and shoveled the sidewalk and fortunately had the bow saw in the car because a fairly big branch was down. I hacked it into pieces I could move and threw it in the dumpster. Then I came home and dug out the path to our front door. I be one tired mofo.

Time to take it easy for a day, Wolf. That was nice of you to shovel the lady's path.

A new sushi joint opened in my small hometown, and we had high hopes. After the session with the realtors, we went to this new place for lunch. Gah! That was some of the worst sushi I ever had.

A rule around here is that if we have an icky meal, we must quickly go to a better place to "erase" the lingering bad taste. So the next day we went to an old favorite of a Japanese family restaurant in Japantown San Jose and had some comforting high quality food. Ahh, negitoro don and chirashi sushi. Good stuff.

The realtors said our house didn't need staging or professional cleaning, which was a load off my mind. I still wanted to dress up the place a bit for showing, so I planted three wine barrel planters full of colorful flowers: scarlet fuchsias, white pansies, and cobalt blue lobelia. They should all be in full flower in a week or two and will look cheerful, not to mention patriotic. I think we'll leave these planters here when we go.

I guess I have to stop buying anything that will need to be frozen. I don't want to dump a bunch of frozen food when we move. The new town is only about three hours away, but still.

Yeah, drawing down the frozen foods and foods in general makes the move easier. Are you taking a fridge or freezer with you?

We're thinking we're going to leave this fridge with the house. Mr. brown wants one with an icemaker and hopes to buy a new one for the new place.

Unfortunately, we'll have to leave our Bosch dishwasher behind. We replaced our ancient noisy one with a Bosch several years ago and it has been a dream, so nice and quiet.

I hope your hose selling process and move go smoothly, teela!

Weekend update:
I was pleasantly surprised when Eldest wanted to come home for the weekend after I picked her up from the airport. She swapped her scheduled Sunday morning shift so she could spend the whole weekend relaxing and finishing up spring break. One last push through April and she's really officially halfway done with college. (credit-wise she was already halfway done because she started with a semester worth of credits from HS) We ran errands Saturday and she found an Easter dress, so all three girls have their requisite holiday finery. I just need to finish procuring basket stuffers and make a food plan. We also visited the "Oriental" Grocery store (I know the word is problematic, but that's its name) and loaded up on all sorts of goodies. I have everything I need to make poke bowls at home now, which makes me happy because none of the restaurants around us sell them. Came home and got my chores done and made Saturday homemade pizza and all was right with the world.

On Sunday I was tapped to accompany the choir on flute for a song. Did a quick grocery run, made brunch early because Husband was off with friends for the day, Swimmy had a friend over for the afternoon, and in the evening I ran Eldest back to school. Also baked cherry pie because I could. I like cherry pie, but apple is better. So is lemon meringue, but it's a pain in the neck to make and dirties every dish in the kitchen. As a compromise we put lemon curd on our pancakes at brunch. That was a good idea.

I'm sure they want to sell more than just the garden hose.

So, yesterday I took Agnes in to the mechanic because she was making scrapy squealing noises from the rear brake that JUST got replaced. She'd also redeveloped a shimmy on braking, like she had before the front brake job that included brand new rotors. This made me grumpy. Well, turned out she had a nasty bad wheel bearing, driver side front, and the mechanic was fully ready to get the bearing in right then and stay late to fix it, but I had to go pick up the grandkid. I drove way slower than usual and today at work I was thinking all the happy thoughts every time I got onto the freeway. Upshot is that the wheel bearing was so fucked up it chewed up the hub it rotates on, requiring that to be replaced as well. On the plus side, mechanic replaced the squeaky shoes in the back and resurfaced the front rotor that the antics of the wheel bearing had caused to warp a little bit--that part was under warranty so I just paid for the bearing and hub replace and two hours labor. Which was plenty, believe me! However, Agnes is now just as I prefer her, rock solid and quiet as the grave. YASSSS.

And today I was driving up in the 'Couve and my route took me right by Chuck's Market so I stopped in because I needed to pee anyway and got to stock up on their signature yummy treats, espresso brownies and key lime squares. Also some sushi, had that for dinner. It's probably really good that Chuck's is so out of reach for me because if it were local I'd eat myself into an earlyish grave they'd have to dig with a giant backhoe. Probably have to bury me in a piano crate lol. But they are SOOOOOO GOOOOOD!

Mom's residence is near Chuck's. I love browsing their stock. So much stuff that I never see in conventional stores and most of it's local! It's like a farmer's market version of Trader Joes.

Another bonus is Larson's Bakery, just across the parking lot from Chuck's. I dropped by to find orange rolls, just like mom used to make. I bought the entire pan and shared with my sister's family.

Dodged a bullet this evening. There's an avenue in town that ends at a tee intersection, and random jerks are constantly zipping down the left lane to cut in front at the right turn. I ended up with one of them next to me a couple blocks before and could see him setting up to make his move. I usually let the rabbits run, but tonight I just wasn't feeling the zen. So I rolled up to exactly ten over the limit, since that's when the ticket gets a lot more spendy.

Well, Mr Leadfoot wasn't having any of that so he gassed it to get around me. Christmas time! Turns out the guy behind him was a state trooper and as usual the winner got pulled over. That'll leave a nice dent in his wallet too, by the time you add in the revised insurance rate. Meanwhile I finished my trip to the store at a sedate pace indeed. On one hand its nice to see a jerk get caught. But I've really got a lot of better things to spend it on, like groceries. So now I'm feeling the zen again.
